Context
Before
The Physical Jerks came into the picture after Winston has a dream about the dark haired girl in which she throws her clothes off with “grace and carelessness”
(p31)
After
Winston goes to work at his job in the Ministry of Truth. We are introduced with what his job is and what a typical assignment that he gets looks like.Slide5
Grim enjoyment (Part 1, Chapter 3, p32)
“Grim”- forbidding or uninviting
“Enjoyment”- the state or process of taking pleasure in something.
These words affect the passage because it also foreshadows his rebellion. If the word grim were not there, we would think Winston truly enjoyed the Physical Jerks.(Part 1, Chapter 3, p32)

(Part 3, Chapter 3, p263)
The Party’s number one goal is power over their people. They do this through psychological and physical control. The Physical Jerks are just another method of the party’s to make sure that all people of Oceania are substantially exhausted.
ConnectionsSlide7
Why would the Party want to keep their people tired?
Wouldn’t it just lessen the amount of work the people got done?
The Party’s benefit from this is simple. The more fatigued a person is the less they think. The less they will realize how unfair the government they lived in was.Another example of this would be the set community center schedules.
Conclusion:The more tired a person=the less

Connection #2Slide9
This connects to my passage because
Winston refers to the morning routine as more military-like than anything else. For example, “Winston sprang to attention.” Also, the Physical Jerks are led by “a youngish woman” who “raps” out instructions and completes the exercises herself with “neatness and efficiency.” The poster is of a soldier, gun pointed straight at the viewer. This is shows the military dynamic of everything in Oceania, including the décor.

The significance of the Physical Jerks is to show how controlling Big Brother and the Party really are. They are just another example of how dominant the government is over it’s people.
SignificanceSlide11
Foreshadowing
This paragraph foreshadows his resentment of the party and indicates his need to rebel.

Part 1, Chapter 3, p36)Slide12
The theme of this passage is “Through Physical exhaustion, people may, willingly, become controlled. Therefore controlling their sense of reality.”
ThemeSlide13
Orwell’s purpose is to warn against physically controlling societies and to encourage you to question the motives of others in power.
