Key Words and Phrases

“In it’s second minute, the Hate rose to a frenzy”(pg 14).

This phrase, and especially the word “Hate” is important to know in order to understand the story. It is capitalized to emphasize the word so readers understand that there may be a lot of hate and conflict going on. There is a lot of violence, rebellion and hatred throughout the story. Therefore, the quotation is showing a connection between the hate of the people and the rebellion that will occur further in the story. Slide3

Key Words and Phrases

“Thoughtcrime was not a thing that

could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you”(pg 19).

This quotation is showing how the thoughtcrime is like your guilt and all of your bad secrets. Since the guilt gets to you, you would not be able to hold your secret in for too long. A theme in this book is rebellion, so this may be telling the readers that Winston may do something thats not right, and he might inform people of his wrong-doings to get pressure off his shoulders.Slide4

Key Words and Phrases

“It was a good hanging, said Syme reminiscently. I think it spoils it when they tie their feet together. I like to see them kicking”(pg 49).

This is important to know because it is showing how they believe that violence and war is peace. It is showing how people there do not have good character at all. This connects to the main theme of violence because it is telling readers how they really think that “ war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength”(pg 16). Slide5

Literary Device

“And sure enough, following on a gory description of the annihilation of a Eurasian army, with stupendous figures of killed and prisoners, came the announcement that, as from next week, the chocolate ration would be reduced from thirty grams to twenty”(pg 26).

This is showing the theme of violence that occurs in the story by using the words “gory” and even the phrase “stupendous figures of killed”. It gives the story the emotion and feeling of suspense and action. Slide6

Literary Device

“Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime IS death” (pg 28).

This quotation ties in with the theme of rebellion or even guilt. It is showing that he/she who commits won’t go to jail or get the death penalty, but it will definitely feel like death because of all the suffering from guilt. It gives the story a more depressing feeling because of all the crime, guilt and death that it talks about. Slide7

Literary Device

“He would tie her naked to a stake and shoot her full of arrows like saint Sebastian. He would ravish her and cut her throat at the moment of climax” (pg 15).

This connects to the theme of violence because it is showing how much hatred the people have and how they would harm others. It makes the story more intense especially because of the word choice. It gives the book a mysterious feeling because you don’t know what will come next.Slide8

Intertextual Connection

“But no, the knocking was repeated” (pg 20).

This can be connected to Edgar Allen Poe’s “Nevermore”, but the simpsons version. The raven was knocking on the door and the windows and it did not stop. It allows the story to be more intense because you don’t know who’s knocking, why they are doing that, or what they are going to do if the door is/ isn’t open. Slide9

Intertextual Connection

“There was a trampling of boots and another blast on the comb as the children changed into the living room” (pg 22).

This connects to a scene in “The Sound of Music” when the seven kids are marching down the stairs like they are in the military. In the book, they aren’t doing it because they are disciplined, they are doing it because they were running around. It shows that the children are not really controlled so their parents may not really care what they do.

Intertextual Connection

“There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any moment” (pg 3).

In The Hunger Games movie, the tributes never really knew if anyone was watching them or about to attack them, so they had to stay hidden. For example, Katniss and Peeta hid in a cave. It makes the story mysterious and suspenseful because it could be foreshadowing that someone could be spying on others. Slide11

“ He was a lonely ghost uttering a truth that nobody would ever hear” ( pg 27).

Is the author telling us that Winston may not tell anyone what he did? or is he trying to tell us that Winston may die and no one will ever know what he did?Slide12

Question

“From the age of uniformity, from the age of Big Brother, from the age of doublethink- greetings!” (pg 28).

Is Winston writing a letter to people?.. because he is saying “ from” and “ greetings”, so it is making it seem like he is writing a message or a letter to people in the future from his time period. Slide13

“ Winston would not definitely remember a time when his country had not been at war, but it was evident that there had been a fairly long interval of peace during his childhood, because one of his early memories was of air raid which appeared to take everyone by surprise” ( pg 32).

Does this mean that violence has been going on for a long time there? Why would there be that much violence? (What was the conflict?)Slide14

Personal Reaction

“ You’re a traitor! yelled the boy . You’re a thought-criminal! You’re a Eurasian spy! I’ll shoot you, i’ll vaporize you, i’ll send you to the salt mines!” ( pg 23).

I thought that this was interesting because it could make Winston feel guilty for doing things that he could get in trouble for doing. What made it worse was that he was concerned that people would catch him for being a traitor and the little boy just said all the things cause he was playing around. Slide15

Personal Reaction

“Some Eurasian prisoners, guilty of war crimes, were to be hanged in the park that evening, Winston remembered” ( pg 23).

I dislike this idea because it deals with violence, and the fact that the kids actually wanted to see the hanging is horrible. It disgusts me that they would do it in public for a lot of other people to see, and it’s gruesome that they would even hang people in the first place.

Contextual Information

“Were there always these vistas of rotting nineteenth-century houses, their sides snored up with balks of timber, their windows patched with cardboard and their roofs with corrugated iron, their crazy garden walls sagging in all directions?” ( pg 3).

This idea is important because it could be telling readers that something tragic has happened in the past to make their city or the houses result in looking like that. It allows readers to understand that the place they live in is not sanitary / not in good condition, which is probably why people are so violent and why Winston is injured.Slide17

Contextual Information

“The two of them must evidently have been swallowed up in one of first great purges of the fifties” (pg 29).

This may be the reason on why Winston is lonely and why the city has no activity, and that everyone is violent. It allows readers to understand that the tragedy that occurred may have had a negative impact on people because either they lost loved ones or just experiencing that scarred them.Slide18

Synthesis

I thought that the themes in 1984 were very interesting. These included hatred, violence, and rebellion. All of this occurred throughout the entire story. Even though it made the book interesting and intense, I didn’t really like them because it made the book seem depressing ,since everything in their world was really messed up. It had different ideas that tied in with the theme is well, which I thought was odd, but it definitely made the book more interesting.Slide19

Synthesis

The author’s writing techniques were really good. He made so many connections to other books, different films, and events that happened in our world. It allowed readers to relate and connect to different things, which helped me understand the book more. He added many details and events in the story. It didn’t make everything seem too hectic.
