Genetic variation is vital to every ecosystem and species because it makes them stable and prosperous. Without genetic variation one simple change to the environment could destroy a whole population. . Friends Seminary, New York. Authors: Ginger Atwood and Juliette Lilly; Mentor: . Vanaja. . While an abundance of industries have been victimized by these adulteries in recent years, the vegetarian hot dog industry has been brought under fire after Clear Food, a Californian food analytics startup, found 14% of their tested vegetarian hot dogs to contain animal DNA. Our aim was to test brands of vegetarian hot dogs from the East Coast for the presence of vertebrate DNA. Samples were processed for DNA barcoding using standard procedures. Both plant and vertebrate primers were used in the amplifications. Our results showed that no vertebrate DNA was detected in the samples we tested.. A “DNA barcode” is a unique pattern of DNA sequence that can identify a species like the unique patterns in universal product codes identify products.. Copé. region. We added sequences from global databases to help confirm the identity of field samples and look for new ones. We analyzed these sequences by inferring the phylogenetic trees of evolutionary relationships for various snake groups to help quantify the biodiversity of snakes in this region of Panama. We also highlight the importance of DNA barcoding as a first step in any molecular study, because often field identification alone cannot confirm the identity of species, especially when samples are in poor condition..
