subcontinents regions amp Countries WHII1 Continents amp Subcontinents Continents One of the large continuous land masses of the earth North America South America Africa Europe Asia Australia Antarctica. According . to Alfred Wegener, the super-continent of Pangea began to break up 200 million years ago with the continents attaining the size, shape, and location where we see them today. This movement of continents has not yet come to an end. According to J. Tuzo Wilson, the breakup and drifting of the present continents . Pangaea. Nearly 100 years ago, Alfred Wegener began an investigation that continues even today. . He wanted to know if Earth’s continents were in fixed (non-moving) positions.. He proposed that all the continents were once part of a supercontinent called Pangaea.. In 1812, Alfred Wegener presented his scientific theory called “Continental Drift”. It was based on his belief that the continents had drifted apart from one another.. Pangaea. Wegener ‘s hypothesis was that all the continents had once been joined together in a single landmass and have since drifted apart.. 1. Continents and Ocean. A continent is one of the seven large landmasses on earth. . . 2. Continents and Oceans. The seven continents are:. Africa . Australia. Antarctica . Asia. North America. South America. Write On . Grade. . 3. Learner Expectation. Content Standard:. 3.0 . Geography enables the students to see, understand and appreciate the web of relationships between people, places, and environments. Students will use the knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts within the six essential elements of geography: world in spatial terms, places and regions, physical systems, human systems, environment and society, and the uses of geography.. Students . know features of the ocean floor (magnetic patterns, age, and sea-floor topography) provide evidence of plate tectonics.. Have you ever wondered why Earth has earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountains?. and . Seafloor Spreading . Notes. Part 1. Alfred Wegener. and the. Continental Drift. hypothesis. Up until the early 1900s, long-held tradition in the earth sciences stated that continents have remained in fixed positions throughout geologic time. How 2 continents fell in love…and created a big, beautiful world. . By: Carla Vigil. SS-EP-4.1.2. Students will use geographic tools to identify major landforms (e.g., continents, mountain ranges), bodies of water (e.g., oceans, major rivers) and natural resources on Earth’s surface and use relative location. Do Now. Why is it important to learn about the continents . and oceans?. Directions. Answer the questions on the back. Question 1 can be found on page H3 and question 3 can be found on page H10. . Questions 2 and 4 can be found on Atlas page 129.. Warm Up. 1. What is the thickest layer of the Earth? . 2. What is the thinnest layer of the Earth?. 3. What happens to temperature as the depth within the Earth increases? . 4. What happens to the density as the depth within the Earth increases? . T. he . E. vidence . F. or . C. ontinental Drift.. Tyler Young . Amesbury 4. th. . Sep. 21, 2015. Alfred Wegener . Alfred . Lothar. Wegener (. nov. , 1, 1880 . -. 1930) was a German polar researcher, geophysicist and meteorologist.. Miss Osment’s First grade . What is a continent?. A . continent . is a large body of land, that is considerably larger than an island, and consists of many different countries. Continents are also characterized by being surrounded by large bodies of water called oceans or seas. . 1. What is Wegener’s hypothesis?. That all of the continents were once joined together is a single landmass and have since drifted apart.. 2. Wegener’s idea that the continents slowly moved over Earth’s surface became known as….. The World. ALFRED WEGENER. THEORY OF CONTINENTAL DRIFT. Found evidence for PANGAEA and proposed the theory of continental drift.. Continental Drift Theory. Theory that continents were once part of a single landmass 200 million years ago that broke apart and have moved to their present locations. .
