Basic Facts. Today the US has @ 1.8 million people behind bars (more than any other country). 100,000 in federal custody. 1.1 million in state custody. 600,000 in local jails. The marginalisation and discrimination experienced by women in society does not stop at the prison entrance. Rather it continues to impinge on their lives even when in state custody, perhaps in its most aggravated forms. . Entering Prison. Prison/Incarceration is a very polarizing issue. It is also a very political issue. Conservative rhetoric- more jails, more sentences, throw people in jail.
