Pompeii

Pompeii

is the story of the deadly eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The volcanic eruption destroyed the Roman cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii.Slide3

Pompeii

The cities were buried in, and preserved by, the

pyroclastic

surge and ash. They are archaeological sites and museums today.Slide4

Mt. Vesuvius

About 16,00 people died in the eruption.

The eruption lasted two days.

The gas, rocks, and ash hit the city of Herculaneum first, and buried it in 2 feet of volcanic debris.Pompeii was hit later, and most of the people who died seem to have died in a wave of heat that reached 300 degrees.

“Herculaneum

and other cities affected by the eruption

of Mount

Rome

When our movie starts, Rome had just become an empire.

It had been a republic until 27

BC, when the nephew of Julius Caesar was named Emperor.Augustus Caesar turned Rome into an Empire. Slide6

Rome

The Romans began to conquer Britain in 43 AD under Emperor Claudius. It took them until 77 AD to subdue all of what we now call England.

The tribes fought back fiercely, but ultimately couldn’t deal with Rome’s massive numbers and technological superiority.

The Romans reacted to the tribes that fought back by enslaving their children and taxing the people.Slide7

Rome

In this film, we will also see gladiators.

Rome loved blood sport. Each city had a public arena, where they had mock battles, public executions, wild animal fights, gladiatorial battles and religious ceremonies.Slide8

Gladiators

Gladiators were usually slaves, volunteers, or sometimes professional athletes.

They fought in group fights, against animals, or one on one.

They fought to the death or until one was wounded badly. A good gladiator could gain fortune and fame.Slide9
