Career Management 101

Career Planning

Slide2

What Is Career Planning?

Career planning is an ongoing process that can help you manage your learning and development.

Career

planning is the continuous process of:

thinking about your interests, values, skills and preferences;

exploring the life, work and learning options available to you;

ensuring that your work fits with your personal circumstances; and

continuously fine-tuning your work and learning plans to help you manage the changes in your life and the world of work.

You can revisit and make use of this process all the way through your career.

Slide3

Who Needs Career Planning?

Here’s a list of the top candidates:

Anybody considering a career change.

Students approaching college graduation.

Prospective college students.

Young adults at the beginning of a career.

People with jobs who are reviewing their options.

Workers in declining industries who need a “Career Plan B.”

Military personnel transitioning to a business career.

Slide4

What Goes Into A Career Plan?

Your career plan needs to take all your objectives into account, such as:

Financial security.

Individual fulfillment.

Work/life balance.

Your unique personal goals.

Figuring these out is only the beginning.

The real key is figuring out how to revise them to match changing needs and circumstances in the years ahead.

Career Planning Steps

The career planning process has four steps:

Step 1: knowing yourself

Step 2: finding out

Step 3: making decisions

Step 4: taking action

Decide which step is relevant for you right now and start from there.

Slide6

Step 1: Knowing Yourself

Begin by thinking about where you are now, where you want to be and how you’re going to get there.

Once you have thought about where you are at now and where you want to be, you can work on getting to know your skills, interests and values.

Begin by asking yourself the following questions:

Where am I at now?

Where do I want to be?

What do I want out of a job or career?

What do I like to do?

What are my strengths?

What is important to me?

At the end of this step you will have a clearer idea of your work or learning goal and your individual preferences. You can use this information about yourself as your personal ‘wish list’ against which you can compare all the information you gather in Step 2: finding out. Your personal preferences are very useful for helping you choose your best option at this point in time, which you can do in Step 3: making decisions.

Slide7

Step 2: Finding Out

This step is about exploring the occupations and learning areas that interest you. Once you have some idea of your occupational preferences you can research the specific skills and qualifications required for those occupations.

Explore occupations that interest you and ask yourself how do my skills and interests match up with these occupations?

Where are the gaps?

What options do I have to gain these skills or qualify for these occupations?

What skills do I need?

Where is the work?

At the end of this step you will have a list of preferred occupations and/or learning options.

Slide8

Step 3: making decisions

This step involves comparing your options, narrowing down your choices and thinking about what suits you best at this point in time.

Ask yourself:

What are my best work/training options?

How do they match with my skills, interests and values?

How do they fit with the current labor market?

How do they fit with my current situation and responsibilities?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option?

What will help and what will hinder me?

What can I do about it?

At the end of this step you will have narrowed down your options and have more of an idea of what you need to do next to help you achieve your goals.

Slide9

Step 4: Taking Action

Here you plan the steps you need to take to put your plan into action.

Use all you have learnt about your skills, interests and values together with the information you have gathered about the world of work to create your plan.

Begin by asking yourself:

What actions/steps will help me achieve my work, training and career goals?

Where can I get help?

Who will support me?

At the end of this step you will have:

a plan to help you explore your options further (ex: work experience, job shadowing or more research); or

a plan which sets out the steps to help you achieve your next learning or work goal.

How Is Career Planning Different From Career Development?

Career planning is only the beginning of the story. Formulating a detailed plan is the first chapter in your career story and career development (also called career management) will be “the rest of the story.”

Career

planning will ideally serve as an ongoing “editor” for all of the remaining chapters as you go along. A career plan should be viewed as a “work in progress” because it needs to be flexible enough to change with the times. Some career-planning experts have combined the two phases and call them “career development plans.”

Working

diligently on career management is essential to overall success of original career plan. That’s why career planning should be coordinated with career development. One does not work well without the other.

The Importance of Career Planning

Career planning helps to pave a secure path. For example, if a person wants to become a banker, they have to possess a Bachelor's degree in finance. Preplanning can help us achieve our educational targets effectively and also helps us to evaluate our personality. In short, career planning is necessary to guide us towards a proper and safer future.

Without

proper planning, we may find ourselves lost - it will also be difficult to find the job we want in the future. Career planning motivates and drives us to accomplish the task.

A

well-planned career helps us to achieve our goals and dreams. As time passes by, we grow and our needs change. Therefore, to keep pace with the future, we need to plan well ahead. Career planning helps us to make many adjustments along the way as we keep learning throughout our lives. Successful people are those who have adopted proper career planning.

Career

planning is an important aspect of our lives, but we should not put too much pressure on ourselves, as that would probably discourage us from making any real, profitable choices.
