7. Color vision and preference: the chicks have fasted for about 4-8 hours but have had water. Put a small amount of each of the 5 colors of food in separate little petri dishes and place them one at a time in front of the chick. Let them only have a few pecks of each or they will get filled and won't react to the others. Then put all 5 in a row. Put the chick a foot or so away and observe its reaction: Move the food dishes if it seems to go always to one color, so that direction alone isn't a factor. Give them rank by 1-5, with 5 as best liked. Results:Red: ___ Orange: ____ Green: ___ Biue: ___ Natural: __ _ Conclusions: ___________________ Did location or nearness alone matter or was there a definite reaction/preference? ______ _ 8. Now that you know your chick much better, mark it with a felt pen if necessary to identify it and put all the chicks back together. Present food and water, as well as the warmth. How do they show rank? Where does your chick rank--approximately (top chick = 1) ? ______ _ Names. ____ _ Date Animal Behavior Lab: Chicks and Their Responses to Different Stimuli SUBJECT: Chicks 1/lab group Type:t.

Age: • 7 days, These chicks are rented for the day and cannot fly--they must be watched constantly to insure that they do not fall off the lab table and hurt themselves!! 1. Observe the entire group of chicks for a few minutes--does there seem to be a dominant or a few dominant ones? Dominance can be shown by being aggressive, adventuresome at approach of people, pushing to get to warm spot in box, etc., record which ones you can observe: ____________________ _ 2. Describe the pleasure call--best observed while all in a group--include the frequency (how often), loudness, tone/pitch, etc.: ____________ _ 3. Describe the distress call and what types of stimuli elicit it , such as isolation, quick motions near it, loud noises, etc.; again include frequency, loudness, and tone: 4. Contrast the pleasure call and distress call; which is more attention getting and indicates location and why?: _______________ _ 5. Food Particle Preference: cut several sizes of black paper and set the chick by it--include round and different angular shapes. What is the minimum size it will respond to? Maximum size?
