While it serves as the location for significant secular and religious events for the country, it’s also the sanctuary for a working Episcopal parish. Known formally as the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, the church is the seat for both the bishop of Washington and the Episcopal Church in the United States. Situated on Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues, NW, it is the fourth tallest structure in the District of Columbia.Pierre Charles L’Enfant included a place for a national cathedral in his plans for the federal city. The National Portrait Gallery occupies that space. The current location of the basilica on Mount St. Alban was selected in 1893. Construction began in 1907. After 83 years of work, the last finial was installed atop the cathedral in 1990. Made from Indiana limestone, the church has Gothic architectural details, such as flying buttresses, vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows. Stone for the interior elements have come from Canterbury Cathedral, Solomon’s Quarry in Jerusalem and the Chapel of Moses on Mount Sinai. The exterior grounds include the Olmstead Woods. One of the last vestiges of Mount St. Alban’s beech and oak forest, the cathedral’s garden includes native plants, a contemplative circle and the Pilgrim Pathway
