Front of the Envelope (FOTE) Awards W
Front of the Envelope (FOTE) Awards What is the FOTE program? The FOTE program is a competitive mechanism that provides funding to faculty who want to forge a new path or to leap from their current research paradigm to something that is fundamentally different. Up to two FOTE awards will be made annually. What can be included in a FOTE budget? This program is a flexible funding mechanism. Awardees will receive up to $25,000 that can be used during the 12-month term of the award and within UTHealth purchasing policies to explore a new idea, establish new collaborations, gain experience in a new area or with a new technique, etc. Possible funding categories include:  Staff and/or faculty salaries (+appropriate fringe) o up to 10% of the PI’s salary  Salary offset will count towards the Faculty Compensation Plan’s minimum salary offset requirement but will not be included in the calculation of the PI’s research incentive (RIP) award  Supplies  Travel  Consultations This program does not provide bridge funding or funding for projects that seek to extend current research programs in obvious directions. Who is eligible? All UTSPH full-time faculty at the rank of assistant professor or higher, tenure or non-tenure track, are eligible. However, individuals are limited to one FOTE application per year. How do I apply? Applications for the FOTE award must be submitted on a white, number ten envelope and may be either hand-written or typed (12 point font). The applicant’s name, division, and campus should appear in the bottom left hand corner of the back of the envelope. On the front of the envelope, the applicant should provide a concise description of the proposed project/activity that emphasizes how it represents a new path for the investigator or a leap to a new paradigm. No budgets or supporting documents are allowed. Applications must be submitted by noon (central) on Thursday August 7, 2014. Faculty in regional campuses should prepare their applications as specified above, scan the front and back of the envelope and send a single pdf file to Peggy.J.Weinshilboum@uth.tmc.edu. In addition, the original envelope should be mailed to Peggy Weinshilboum. Faculty in Houston should submit their envelope directly to Peggy Weinshilboum in RAS W212. Applicants will be reviewed and ranked by a blinded panel of at least three investigators. The top applicants will be asked to submit a detailed budget and budget justification. Final funding decisions will be based on the merit of the proposed project and the need/appropriateness of the requested funding. Copies of FOTE applications from previous awardees can be found in the UTSPH Grants Repository in the “UTSPH” folder under Internal Grants. The Grants Repository can be accessed from the School’s website: https://secureshare.uth.tmc.edu/ssf/a/c/p_name/ss_forum/p_action/1/binderId/1716612/action/view_permalink/entityType/folder/novl_url/1.
