The interactions between Schistosome parasites and their intermediate snail hosts at the molecular level are crucial events that determine the success/failure of a parasite's infectivity (

Adema

et al., 2012; Webster et al., 2016). The study of such interactions is currently attracting tremendous attention, particularly in relation to the development of strategies aimed at interrupting parasite transmission (Gray et al., 2012; Cantacessi et al., 2013) and hence Schistosomiasis control (Adema et al., 2012). Although, there are many studies designed understand these interactions. The exact clinically relevant proteins are unknown. Since proteins represent the primary interface of molecular interactions between snails and trematode parasites, identifying the important ones is crucial to assist future investigations of snail-focused approaches to parasite control (Prasopdee et al., 2015). A more sensitive and high throughput approach in identification of novel proteins and biomarkers from a complex mixture is the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled with Tandem Mass Spectrometry, which is also called Shotgun proteomics. This technique has facilitated the discovery of potential biomarkers for a number of human and animal diseases (Harvie et al., 2007). Therefore, in this study, we applied shotgun proteomics in Identification of Novel Biomarkers of Schistosoma mansoni in Biomphalaria glabrata.

4.0 Discussion

A couple of novel biomarkers were identified in Schistosoma mansoni infected Biomphalaria glabrata. These proteins particularly those suggested to play a role in snail defence, may be important targets for vector control for Schistosomiasis.

Conclusion

A total of 197, 101 and 225 proteins were identified at MSS, DSS and CSS in the infected snails respectively, while the control group had 195, 267 and 110, with 68, 69 and 53, proteins shared by the three stages, respectively. New biomarkers identified at the MSS, DSS and CSS were 22.0, 7.0 and 5.0, respectively. Fifty percent unique biomarkers at MSS were enzymes, 19.0% for both defense and signaling proteins, 7.0% ion binding proteins and 5.0% transporter proteins. At DSS, 28.0% were signaling proteins, 27.0% metabolism proteins, 18.0% for both ion-binding proteins and enzymes, with 9.0% defense proteins. A defense protein, vwc domain-containing protein 3, was the only biomarker unique to MSS and DSS and was 4.4-fold more abundant in MSS. At the Bg-CSS, 40.0% of the most important biomarkers were defense proteins, with the new protein PRP3 critical in snail defense. Biomarkers unique to MSS and CSS were peptidoglycan recognition protein (PRP) 3 , PRP and calcium binding protein 1 with 1.2, 1.5 and 187.4-fold abundance in MSS, respectively.
