Fowler Department: Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) History & Mission: Established in 1921, the IHS was transferred from the Interior Department in 1955. The Indian Health Service is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. The IHS currently provides health services to approximately 1.5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives who belong to more than 557 federally recognized Tribes in 35 states. The mission of the IHS, in partnership with American Indian and Alaska Native people, is to raise their physical, mental, social, and spiritual health to the highest level. The goal of the IHS is to ensure that comprehensive, culturally acceptable personal and public health services are available and accessible to all American Indian and Alaska Native people. The foundation of the IHS is to uphold the federal government’s obligation to promote healthy Indian peo ple, communities, and cultures and to honor and protect the inherent sovereig
