DLR Notes- Parallel Structure- Monday, January 5, 2015

Parallel

structure (also called parallelism) is the repetition of a chosen grammatical form within a sentence.

This means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more words or ideas are of equal importance and to help the reader comprehend what is being written. It is grammatically correct to ensure that phrases, clauses and items on a list after a colon (:) use the correct parallel structure.

Example

Not Parallel:

Ellen likes hiking, the rodeo, and to take afternoon naps.

Parallel:

Ellen likes hik

ing

, attend

ing

the rodeo, and tak

ing

afternoon naps.

You may also rewrite sentences in other ways, but it must be grammatically consistent.
