Early Life

Dixon was born 1801 in Richmond,

His father was a barber and his mother was a washerwoman He went to charity school Dixon was teased by his friends and was called Negro or MulattoSlide3

Dixon In Blackface

Dixon was known for being one of the first

americans

to perform in blackface His first performance “Coal Black Face” in 1829 New York City He is most famous for the song “Zip Coon”

He sold a bunch of skits and songs that he wrote in 1830 Slide4

Dixon The Writer

Dixon started a newspaper called “Stonington Cannon” in 1833 but he went back to performing a year later

In 1835 he moved to Lowell, Massechussets and started writing for a few papers He was known for the “Dixon’s Daily Review”

He had a lot of enemies because he use to talk about other writer’s and editor’sSlide5

Dixon And The Law

Dixon had a lot of issues with the law

In 1838 he was charged with slander He served six months in Blackwell prisonSlide6

Dixon Late Life

He had different jobs he was a spiritualist and animal

magnetist

He became a competitive long distance walker He compete by walking 40, 50, 60 hours After years of run-in’s with politics he was jailed in a New Orleans

He died on March 2, 1861 in New Orleans, LASlide7

Dixon’s birth date is unknown but believed to be 1801 because of his death certificate

Dixon was arrested multiple times and served 6 months in jail His ethnicity ha s always been a question , although he looked white
