Mastheads and Taglines

My mastheads and taglines are suitable for Horror movies as they use words which connote death and murder. They also give the impression of psychopath antagonists thus making the movie relatively relatable for the audience hence causing tension and suspense.“Sinister Saturday – Let the party begin!”My masthead idea fits with the Horror genre because ‘sinister’ means deadly, in addition, I used the word ‘Saturday’ which connotes freedom, fun and trouble free; this contrasts with the deadly connotation of ‘sinister’. My tagline creates tension because it is an imperative – ‘let’, furthermore, ‘party’ connote both good and bad times thus creating tension and suspense.“Feast of Bodies – Deep fried fingers or hard boiled brains?”This masthead causes the audience to foreshadow that the antagonist of this movie might be a psychopath as ‘feast’ means a large meal, the fact that the antagonist is having a large meal of bodies suggests to the audience that the antagonist has discombobulated his/her victims. To emphasise that the bodies have been separated, I used a tagline where the audience is offered a menu of ‘deep fried fingers’ and ‘hard boiled brains’; this make the antagonist sound revolting and repugnant. Furthermore, a rhetorical question is used to involve the audience so they feel more tense and anxious.“Apocalypse – You can run but you can’t hide”The word ‘apocalypse’ connotes hopeless, despair and misfortune, this is appropriate for a horror movie masthead because although it’s only word, it is powerful, it causes the audience to feel helpless and defenceless as tragedy unfolds before their eyes. The tagline of this uses direct address which involves the audience into the movie thus making them interested in the film. Also direct address puts the audience in a state where they are in the movie and cannot escape. The word ‘run’ is used in the tagline, this implies that they may make the effort to evade by running. The word ‘hide’ connotes escape, freedom and safety, using this in the tagline implies that the audience/protagonist can try to evacuate but regardless of their efforts, they’ll never be able to escape the destiny that is set. This creates tension, suspense and worry in the audience, at the same time, it stimulates their interest.Slide2

Masthead Analysis

There is a symbol of a target here, this denotes aim, it connotes technology and science. This symbol suggests that the movie may be sci-fi horror. This denotes technology and a scientific watch. From this, I infer that there’ll be a survival because they have to be able to live through the time given. It also looks slightly retro and washed out/rusted, this suggests that metal elements will be involved.

This appears like an electrical circuit thus connoting technology and sci-fi.

This appears to be a mechanical door, there is no handle which implies that it’s an automatic high-tech door, this then suggests that the movie will be sci-fi based. Also this door looks like it’s metal therefore strong, it may be an euphemism that something is hidden away. Automatic metal doors are usually used in labs and underground bases, this connotes mystery and danger; perhaps the movie involves a lab.

This font has reflections, this suggests that it’s silver and metallic hence it connotes sci-fi. In addition, the ‘E’ of this font is curved, not straight, and the ‘S’ of this font is half completed, the arc isn’t extended; this implies that it’s futuristic. The ‘R’ of this font has a stretched end, it is sharp which connotes danger; it denotes the tip of a needle so maybe injections are involved in the movie.

The background of this is black, this helps the font stand out but also suggests danger and creates tension and suspense as black connotes death and evilness.

The font colour is slightly blue, this denotes water, perhaps there will be a scene which takes place underwater in the movie. The font is slender and slim, this may be to represent the font that is usually used in science reports which are old fashioned but classic. The light colour helps to contrast with the background.

This blue glow from around the text connotes new drugs, this suggests that the movie will be sci-fi based and involves some form of vaccine/medicine; following horror movie conventions, this drug may be the solution or threat of the movie. Generally, in sci-fi horror movies, drugs tend to lead to a zombie apocalypse therefore I infer that the movie may be about zombies and survival.

Another interpretation of this blue fluid is that it is steam/water vapour because there are some spots where it’s not blue so perhaps the steam/vapour was wiped off; the spots could also be splatters of blood but in negative colour.Slide3

Masthead Analysis

There are blots of grey here, this denotes mould and implies that this setting/location has been left unmaintain

ed for very long and that it’s most probably deserted from society. This creates tension and suspense as it suggests that it’s an abandoned house which is a common convention of a horror movie. At the same time, it also suggests that this may be the location of where the trouble maker found out about a certain mystery and caused this disaster.

These cracks suggests that this wall/building is not preserved and that there could be possible dangers as it

implies that it’s unstable

, again this adds to revealing the setting of this movie which is likely to be at an abandoned infrastructure.

The font of this masthead is very traditional hence connoting that there’ll be something from the past in the movie; perhaps the threat of the movie has been a threat previously in time. The colour of this is a faded grey/black, this colour connotes evil and danger, the masthead of this movie is most likely based on the antagonist of the movie.

The text of this font

has an extended smudged end at the bottom of each letter, this suggests that it was painted on with a fluid and it flowed downwards. However, it also suggests that someone may have written this then the writing eventually eroded due to poor maintenance, this proves (again) the idea of the movie being set in an abandoned house. The trails on the masthead seem as though they were dragged by fingers, this implies that someone was in danger and they were desperately trying to escape/resist being taken away.

There are shadows behind the masthead, this could be a metaphor that something is lurking in the back – creating tension and suspense/

The background of this masthead is a subtle grey, this denotes a simple wall of a storage; the choice of colour helps the masthead stand out.

These blots might be worn out blood splatters rather than mould patches because they’re much larger, this creates danger and tension.

The tagline of this says “him” as an euphemism which interests the audience so they want to know who “he” is. It also connotes danger thus

tension and suspense
