The next slides will describe what happened during the

middle of the French Revolution…We pick up where we left off in 1789 after the Storming of the Bastille…Slide3

Great Fear (October 1789)

In the Great Fear, peasants

were afraid that the nobles were out to get them! So, they ran through the countryside and broke into nobles’ houses

.

They

tore up the legal contracts that

bound (tied)

them to their masters and sometimes, even burned their houses down!Peasants wanted to be free from their masters!Slide4

March on Versailles (October 1789)

In Paris in October 1789, nearly 6,000 peasant women rioted over the high price of bread.

Their anger took them all the way to the famous Palace of Versailles. (Remember, the palace symbolized all the wasteful excess of the monarchy, and the poor peasants were starving.)

The famous palace today!Slide5

March on Versailles (October 1789)

Once they got there, they broke into the palace and killed two guards.

The women demanded that Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette come back to Paris! Finally, the King had no choice, but to agree. This event signaled the end of the power of the monarchy and the start of radical reforms!Slide6

King & Queen try to Escape (1791)

After all this, Louis XVI figured that this revolution was for real and that his family was in danger.

He made a plan for them all to escape to Austria. However, as they neared the French border a postman recognized him and they were all forced to return back to Paris!
