The Milkmaid and Her Pail

Lesson:

It’s fine to dream about what you will do with money you don’t yet have, but

until

the money is actually in your hands, don’t spend it or make any promises about what you’ll do with it. Only when you have the money can you feel free to turn your dreams into reality

.

In the fable Patty was counting on the money she would get from selling the milk before she had it, and was so caught up in her plans that she “tossed her head ..and the milk was spilt.” Slide3

The Ant and the Grasshopper

Lesson: The grasshopper was not planning on future necessities (needs) because he was counting on what he already had.

When the Ant recommended he lay up food for the winter, he commented “Why bother…we have got plenty of food at present.” When winter came he had no food and was dying of hunger.Slide4

EVIDENCE

The Milkmaid & her Pail

“With the money that I get from the sale of these eggs I’ll buy myself a new dimity frock and a chip hat; …won’t all the young men come up and speak to me!” but then, “As she spoke she tossed her head back, the Pail fell off it, and all the milk was spilt.”

The Ant and the Grasshopper

He “…was hopping about…Why bother about winter?.. we have got plenty of food at present.”..When winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger.” Slide13

The two fables are similar because they both teach a lesson about the importance of wise planning.

EXPLAIN

The Milkmaid & her Pail

The milkmaid

was foolishly planning how to spend money she did not yet have.

With the money that I get from the sale of these eggs I’ll buy myself a new dimity frock and a chip hat; …won’t all the young men come up and speak to me!” but then, “As she spoke she tossed her head back, the Pail fell off it, and all the milk was spilt.” Wisdom doesn’t count on what it does not yet have

The Ant and the GrasshopperIn “The Ant and the Grasshopper” the grasshopper was not wise because he only counted on what he had in the present and did not plan for the “necessities” of the future.

Conclusion: Both made errors in planning. One planned on what she did not yet have and the other did not plan for not having.  Slide16

Final answer:
