About Robert Browning

He was English poet, Mastery of Dramatic verse, Dramatic monologues and one of the most Victorian poets. Robert was born on May 7,1812 in Camber well which is now known as South London. He first started writing poetry when he was 12 years of age which he later destroyed when no publisher could be found. Robert Browning was the oldest child of two and adored music but dedicated himself to Poetry which he loves very much.Slide3

The History

The Poem was first published as “Porphyria” in January 1836 but was later changed to Porphyria's Lover in 1863. It is Browning's first ever short poem and also the poem his first abnormal psychology.The poem received little critical attention in the 19th century, it is now anthologised and much studied.Slide4

SummaryThe unnamed speaker of the poem sits by himself in his house on a stormy night. Porphyria, his lover, arrives out of the rain, starts a fire in the fireplace, and takes off her dripping coat and gloves. She sits down to snuggle with the speaker in front of the fire and pulls his head down to rest against her shoulder. The speaker realizes for the first time how much Porphyria loves him. So…he strangles her with her hair. Then he opens her eyes, unwraps the hair from her neck, and spends the rest of the night cuddling with her corpseSlide5
