EARLY beloved, on ––––– day next I e, through God’s aance, to er to all hall be religiouly and devoutly died the mo comfortable Sac-rament of the Body and Blood of Chri; to be by them received, in remembrance of his meri-ion; whereby alone we obtain remiion of our ins, and are made partakers of the kingdom of heaven. Where-fore it is our duty to render mo humble and hearty thanks to Almighty God our heavenly Father, for that he hath given his Son our Saviour Jeus Chri, not only to die for us, but COMMUNION. o to be our piritual food and enance in that holy Sacrament. Which being and comfortable a thing to them who receive it o dangerous to them that will ume to receive it unworthily; my duty is to exhort you, in the mean on, to conider the dignity of that holy myery, and the great peril of the unworthy receiving thereof; and ciences, (and that not lightly, and after the manner of emblers with God: but o) that ye may come holy and clean to uch a heavenly feain the marriage-garment required by God in holy Scripture, and be received as worthy partakers of that holy Table. The way and means thereto is; Firexamine your lives and converations by the rule of God’s commandments; and wherein-hall perceive yourelves to have of-fended, either by will, word, or deed, there to bewail your own s, and to confeelves to Almighty God, with full purpoof amendment of life. And if ye hall perceive your offences to be uch, as are not only God, but al your neighbours; then ye elves unto them, being ready to make reitution and atiion, according to the uttermo of your powers, for all injuries and wrongs done by you to any other; and being likewi COMMUNION. forgive others who have offended you, as you would have forgivenes of your offences at e the receiving of the holy Communion doth nothing ele your damnation. Therefore, if any of you be a blaphemer of God, an hinderer or landerer of his Word, an adulterer, or be in malice, or envy, or in any other grievous crime; repent you of your ins, or ele come not to that holy Table; le after taking of that holy Sacrament, the devil enter into you, as he entered into Judas, and fill you full of all ini-quities, and bring you to deion both of And becaue it is requiite, that no man hould come to the holy Communion, but with in God’s mercy, and with a quiet cience; therefore, if there be any of you, who by this means cannot quiet his own con-cience herein, but requireth further comfort or el; let him come to me, or to creet and learned Minier of God’s Word, and open his grief; that by the miniry of God’s holy Word he may receive the benefit of olution, together with gholy counel and advice, to the quieting of his concience, and COMMUNION. Or, in caee the people negligent to come to the holy Com-ead of the former, he may ue this Exhortation. EARLY beloved brethren, on ––––– I intend, by God’s grace, to celebrate the Lord’s Supper: unto which, in God’s behalf, I bid you all that are here preent; and beyou, for the Lord Jeus Chriake, that ye e to come thereto, being lovingly called and bidden by God himelf. Ye know how grievous and unkind a thing it is, when a man hath prepared a rich fea, decked his table with all kind of proviion, it e, mo unthankfully refue to come. Which of you in moved? Who would not think a great injury and wrong done unto him? Wherefore, modearly beloved in Chri, take ye good heed, ye withdrawing yourelves from this holy Supper, provoke God’s indignation againyou. It is an eaay, I e I am otherwihindered with worldly bus. But uch ex-es are not ily accepted and allowed before God. If any man ay, I am a grievous inner, and therefore am afraid to come: wherefore then do ye not repent and amend? When God calleth you, are ye not aay ye will not come? When ye COMMUNION. to God, will ye excuelves, and ay, ye are not ready? Conider earnely with your-uch feigned excues will avail before God. They that refued the fea in the pel, becaue they had bought a farm, or would try their yokes of oxen, or becauwere married, were not ed, but counted unworthy of the heavenly fea. I, for my part, hall be ready; and, according to mine office, I bid you in the Name of God; I call you in ’s behalf; I exhort you, as ye love your alvation, that ye will be partakers of this holy Communion. And as the Son of God did afe to yield up his oul by death upon alvation; o it is your duty to receive the Communion in remembrance of acrifice of his death, as he himcommanded: which if ye to do, ider with yourelves, how great injury ye do unto God, and how hment hangeth over your heads for the ame; when ye wilfully abain from the Lord’s Table, and eparate from your brethren, who come to feed on the banquet of that mo heavenly food. e things if ye earnely conider, ye will by God’s grace return to a better mind: for the obtaining whereof. we hall not ceae to make our humble petitions unto Almighty God our COMMUNION. For as the be-nefit is great, if with a true penitent heart and lively faith we receive that holy Sacrament; (for then we piritually eat the fleh of Chripiritually drink his blood; then we dwell in Chri in us; we are one with , and Chri with us:) o is the danger great, if we receive the ame unworthily: For then we are guilty of the Body and Blood of our Saviour; we eat and drink our own damnation, not conidering the Lord’s Body; we kindle God’s wrath again us; we provoke him to plague us with divers diundry kinds of death. Judge therefore your-elves, brethren, that ye be not judged of the Lord; repent you truly for your ; have a lively and eadfa faith in Chri our Sa-viour; amend your lives, and be in perfecharity with all men; hall ye be meet partakers of thoe holy myeries.
