Back Story...

CeCe and Jaclyn have been best friends since the 3rd grade. Currently, they are in middle school in the 8th grade. They love to have sleepovers, go to the mall, and have a snapchat streaks a mile long. Recently, CeCe got a new iPhone X and left it at Jaclyn’s house after school. She asked Jaclyn to bring it to school the next day. Jaclyn said it wasn’t at her house. At school the next day, CeCe accused Jaclyn of not looking for the phone at her house or even possibly keeping it for herself. Jaclyn felt angry that her friend accused her of stealing and CeCe felt angry that her friend betrayed her. A teacher overheard the argument and sent them to the counselor’s office.

This is where the journey to forgiveness begins as the school counselor was out for the day but had a letter for the two friends…

Letter left for CeCe and Jaclyn

CeCe and Jaclyn-I am out for the day and I heard that you have some concerns.

I have taught you many good strategies to resolve conflicts. I know you can solve this problem if you use those strategies.

I trust that you will be able to WORK through this, but both of you need to be willing to TALK and HEAR each other.

Sincerely,

Your School Counselor

Talking Points for MSCA Presentation

All situations are different and people respond differently to painful situations or psychological conflicts/hurtBlame, trying to make sense & get rid of pain

Acknowledgement of loss/hurt

Personal power, choice to forgive (not the same as reconciliation)

Stewing over hurt or plotting revenge is a breeding ground for resentment and anger which hurts self

Try to understand other person’s perspective

Forgive self otherwise leads to shame and guilt, and can lead to pathological self-blame

Cultivating empathy for oneself

Mistakes and saying sorry or making other amends
