The NYS Teacher Certification Exams are not required to graduate from SCW with an Educat ion major. Students should apply to the program by the end of their sophomore year and are required to meet with a member of the Education Department at least once per semester. Late entrants to the major are required to plan their schedules with Dr. Hirsc h . T he Fieldwork Handbook and Student Teacher Handbook are available on the Education Department website * . Education majors are expected to familiarize themselves with the contents of the handbook, under the resource s tab, including specific policies, responsibilities, and guidelines. 2. In choosing liberal arts courses to fulfill general requirements, students are strongly advised to make an effort to include courses in as many of the following disciplines as possible: Art ; Economics ; Music ; Philosophy ; Political Science ; Sociology . 3. Students will be placed by the Fieldwork Supervisor in local schools to complete their residency (i.e. Fieldwork and Studient Teaching) requirements. Students are responsible for their own transportation to Fieldwork and Student Teaching locations . 4. Majors should complete their HEBR and JHIS distributions , as well as their General Education requirements , prior to student teaching since these courses may not be offered in the late afternoon. 5. Majors are required to take four training workshops: Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse ; School Safety and V iolence Prevention ; DASA; Autism . More information will be offered at SCW , Azriel , or available in the Student Teacher Handbook . 6. Prior to fieldwork in the NYC schools, preservice candidates are required by law to be fingerprinted. Dr. Joan Rosenberg, our certifications officer, coordinates the fingerprinting and background checks. Candidates must meet with her prior to fieldwork. Complete the OSPRA 1 04 form to transfer the prints to the NYS. 7. Prior to the senior year, all majors must access the on - line application for teacher certification at http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/teach/ . 8 . Majors must successfully complete the following NYSTCE (New York State Teacher Cer tification Examinations) exam s at the level specified by

NY State to re ceive initial NYS certification: a) Literacy, Mathematics and Multi - Subject CST b) Educating all Students Test (EAS) c) edTPA New York State Teacher Certification Examination (NYSTCE) program bulletins and practice exams are available and downloadable online at: http://www.nystce.nesinc.com/NY_annProgramUpdate.asp . The schedule for exam dates and regi stration deadlines are listed on the website. Students who expect to teach out - of - state should also take the National Teachers Exam (NTE). SCW – Education Factsheet Page 3 of 3 FS _ EDUC [ 20 20 - 01 ] Education M in or Total Credits: 1 8 The 18 credit Education minor is designed to provide non - majors with a broad exposure to the principal ideas and trends in contemporary educational theory and practice. The course of study is appropriate for students who are contemplating becoming teachers or entering fields that involve teaching, e.g. SSSB majors who aspire to teach in the business arena, majors in the Fine Arts whose professions may include both art - making and teaching, or students in the humanities and sciences who intend to teach at the middle or high school level.
