BUS DEGREE BACHELOR OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES HOUSED IN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE - INTERDISCIPLINARY DEGREE MAJOR IN BUS IS MADE UP OF: 2 MINORS AND A CAPSTONE INDIVIDUALIZED MINOR One of the minors can be an ‘Individualized Minor’ for students interested in a theme not offered as part of any existing minors at NAU ADVISING & STEERING COMMITTEE Gateway Student Success Advising plays a vital role in identifying appropriate students and in approving the program of study
BUS DEGREE ROLE OF GATEWAY ADVISORS ROLE Gateway advisors play a major role in identifying students with: No declared majors A disproportionate number of credit hours earned How do advisors work with students? To identify their area of interest If no suitable major can be found but certain minors or ‘individualized minors’ can be identified, students are guided toward the BUS degree Advisors work with the student to set up a program of study The BUS Steering Committee reviews and approves the program of study
BUS DEGREE BUS REQUIREMENTS Admission Currently Students must have 60 units CAPSTONE Students can take a capstone course in the unit/department administering the program Students can take the BUS 450C administered by the BUS program 36 units Successful completion of 2 minors Or an individualized minor (36 units) Junior level writing course from a discipline or ENG 302W or ENG 305W Learning Outcomes Demonstrate the intellectual and practical skills of written/oral communication, analytic reasoning/critical thinking and quantitative reasoning Apply knowledge of human cultures, diversity, and global issues to intra/interpersonal situations Apply knowledge of the physical/natural world and scientific literacy in appropriate contexts and to situations involving the interaction with the environment Demonstrate problem-solving and application of skills in a real world setting Synthesize the skills and objectives from the breath of liberal studies, diversity, and 2 disciplines to apply to novel situations specific to career goals
BUS DEGREE Role of Steering Committee Composition Group of faculty from various colleges across campus BUS instructor Mandate Charged with o perationalize BUS degree in 2011-2012 Approves programs of study from students applying to the BUS program Works with the instructor of the BUS 450C and the students to assess the BUS program using various measures Defines the progression of the BUS program to future thematic strands in line with University objectives Appoints BUS mentors
