The artwork, composed of individual 4Ó x 4Ó tilesdesigned and painted by each 5thgrade student and teacher, brings color and creativity to a pviously empty wall in a heavily used staircase. The project encouraged kids to make an individual statementwithin a colorful composition that works together as a whole. The kids and teachers were eachgiven a tile andasked to paint somethingfrom their hearts and minds, symbolically, like a stamp. The mural captures a moment of the 5thgradersÕ spirit. Many people collaborated to produce this beautiful memory of this yearÕs 5thgrade class. We would especially liketo thank lead parent volunteers Hadar Ironand Rebecca Bloomfor their vision and commitment; Dejan Miovic, Jenny Ott andKaren Zeribifor fundraising and project support; teacher Beth Zirngibleforhelp with production; the5thgrade teachersforfindingtime for this activity;and all the parentswho worked with the kids, helped with glazing, firing and assembly of the tiles, baked goodies, contributedfunds, and showed your enthusiasm for the project! Looking Back at a Busy Year As the year comes to aclose I want to take time to reflect on the PTAsupported counseling departmentÕs time spent with the students of Thurgood Marshall. Over the year I have had the opportunity to connect with kids in grades K5 through 314 different classroom counseling lessons. These lessons have spanned in topic focus including emotion identification & regulation, problem solving, bullying prevention, career awareness & exploration, test preparation, teamwork, peer pressure, and transitioning to middle school. In addition, I have had over 300 individual counseling sessions with our students, helping them problem solve, stand up for themselves, and work through tough topics. This year I also offered fivetypes of groups (grief/loss, divorce, friendship, social skills, and school success) and had eightrounds of groups, each composed of eightvisits per group. We also were able to do some schoolwide outreachwith three assemblies this year, two from Taproot Theatre focused on reducing bullying and being an upstanderand one assembly by Hope Heart about overall health and wellnessThis year I also had the joy of training just shy of 60 4th- and 5thgrade Conflict Mediators and Recess Mentorsto be problem solvers and peer models on the playground for younger students. Their help has been an amazing asset to our school community and I applaud them for their hard work! Last but not least, this spring was our first effort in starting a arentled book groupfocused onhelping kids and families find balance and achieve their goals in meeting the social and emotional needs of each child. IÕm sad the year is wrapping up but I look forward to next year when we can start new with fun programs, lessons, and groups to help support everyone through their social, emotional, and academic wellbeing!Coyote Central Community Art Project Installation and Celebration Takes Place his SummerCoyote CentralÕs Hit the Streetspublic youth art project commemorating Justice Thurgood Marshallwill be installed on our school campus this summer.
