14. Press ReleaseHONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announced today that it will soon begin exploratory drilling work at the Kawailoa Road Bridge in Kailua. Due to a delay in obtaining the necessary permits, the drilling and sampling work originally scheduled to begin on August 1, 2022 was temporarily moved back. Now that all necessary permits have been approved, drilling and sampling work will be performed from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, between August 22, 2022 and September 2, 2022. Single-lane closures over the two-lane bridge will be necessary at certain times so that crews can conduct soil sampling work associated with the bridge scour evaluation.During the single-lane closures, the roadway will remain open, as will the driveway adjacent to the bridge. Traffic flaggers and/or uniformed Honolulu Police Department officers will be on-site directing traffic at both ends of the closure. Parking in the Lanikai area will be restricted from August 22, 2022 through September 2, 2022, similar to the restrictions that are in effect during most holiday weekends. Note that the restrictions will be in effect for the Statehood Day holiday weekend, from August 19 until August 21, 2022.Motorists in the area, including residents who live on the Lanikai side of the Kawailoa Road Bridge and beachgoers who are headed to the area, are advised to plan for extra travel time near the Kawailoa Road Bridge.

15. Press ReleaseAdditional investigative in-water work under the bridge is scheduled to begin sometime between late September and early October. No lane closures will be necessary. Work will be conducted at each of the five footers beneath the bridge and will include excavation of the streambed. Work will be conducted on one bridge footer at a time, to allow for continued access by users through the stream, and is expected to be performed from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the work taking between three and five weeks to complete. The Kawailoa Road Bridge project is unrelated to the upcoming Kawailoa Road Drainage Improvement Project, which will also be starting this month. Although both projects are scheduled to run concurrently, lane closures for each project will not occur at the same time. The City wants to remind drivers to follow the rules of the road and obey all traffic signals and signage. Please remember to drive with caution in area where crews are working.Map showing the parking restrictions in Lanikai that will be in effect from August 22, 2022 through September 2, 2022.
