Cillia and Flagella John Bassili & Zheeanna Zahid

Structure Of Cilia . Cilia are slender, microscopic, hair like structures that extend from the surface of nearly all multiple or single cells. . They are tiny hair like structures that prokaryotes can use to move.. There are a diverse amount of cilia per cell.

Structure Of Flagella-Prokaryotes Flagella consist of three main parts: Filament . Is the long outermost region of flagella, extends from the cell surface to the tip. . . The Filament is a hollow, rigid cylinder constructed of a single protein called Flagellin 2. Hook . The filament is attached to a wider hook. . The hook penetrates the cell wall and connects the main filament and basal body and acts as a flexible coupling.. . Allows the axis of the helix to point directly away from the cell 3. Basal body . anchor the flagellum to the cell wall and plasma membrane . basal ring has 2 sets of rings, Proximal set and Distal set. Each set has 2 rings : M-ring, S-ring, P-ring, L-ring

Structure Of Flagella- Eukaryotic Consists of 9 fused pairs of microtubules that make a cylinder. There are 2 unfused microtubules present in the center of the cylinder called the Central Microtubule. Called a 9+2 arrangement.

Functions Of Cilia Allow cells to be mobile and able to complete tasks that involve movement Use hair- like appendages to initiate burst movements using short projectionsAlso allows the cell to move objects that are around it using the force from the motion that it creates.

Functions Of Flagella Allow cells to be mobile and able to complete tasks that involve movement Moves by using a rotational movement Ex- Sperm cells propelling itself in the female reproductive tract Transport cellular fluids Also do this using the force from the rotational movement created

Location of Cilia and Flagella Cillia Found in Eukaryotic Cells An example of this is can be examined in cells of sensory organs such as the eyes and noseFlagella Unlike Cillia, flagella can be found on both cells of prokaryotes and eukaryotes An example of this in eukaryotes is a sperm cell An example in prokaryotes is E.Coli Flagella found on an an E.Coli cell
