The adjectives

fat, fatter and fattest

are called the positive, comparative and superlative respectively.For most adjectives of one syllable and some two-syllable adjectives

–er is added to for comparatives and –

est is added to form superlatives. Example : big 

bigger  biggest

small  smaller 

For adjectives of two or more syllables, the comparative is formed by adding

more / less before the adjective, and the superlative is formed by adding most / least

before the adjective.Several adjectives have irregular comparatives and superlatives and follow a different pattern.Slide4
