DESCRIPTION The Bordered brown lacewing was first discovered in the UK in 1989 and has only been recorded in 4 UK sites all of which are in Scotland. The only current population is thought to exist on Arthurs Seat, however this has not been reported since 1980, so it s continued existence there is also in question. This species is associated with Woodsage on rocky slopes. Lacewings are generally aphid (greenfly) predators and can provide important biological control for these pest species. The adults have 4 large intricately veined wings. The Bordered brown lacewing is a Scottish Biodiversity List, UK Biodiversity Action Plan and Red Data Book species. DISTRIBUTION MAP The only population is on Arthurs Seat FURTHER READING UK Biodiversity Action Plan for M. hirtus http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/_speciespages/2409.pdf P. Duelli da Wachmann & Saure, 1997, http://neurotteri.casaccia.enea.it/megalomus_hirtus.htm THREATS The entire known UK population is restricted to a single location making it very vulnerable to any changes in land management such over or under - grazing and erosion, trampling and burning due to increased public access. ACTION REQUIRED  Retention of rocky slopes with wood sage, at the single site where this lacewing occurs.  Avoid disturbance from trampling or erosion.  Managemen t of vegetation e.g. by grazing to improve conditions for this specie s MSP SPECIES CHAMPION Gordon MacDonald MSP Member for: Edinburgh Pentlands Region: Lothian Party: Scottish National Party info@buglife.org.uk www.buglife.org.uk LINK Wildlife Forum Species Champions Bordered Brown Lacewing
