For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah. 29:11 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14 I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”

Memory Verse

These words came after God told Israel there was no “early release” from their discipline: they were to spend the full 70 years as slaves in Babylon:Slide2

Ever be around someone (not romantic) who was interested in what you thought, how you are doing? They made you feel special, loved? How could you tell? What did they do? Slide3

Vernon GroundsEvan HornerI met Dr. Grounds for the first time in 2003. In just a brief amount of time, both my wife and I were aware that we were in the presence of someone who genuinely cared. It radiated from him.Ken Langley

When I left the ministry for a while, burdened by doubts about the Bible, Vernon walked with me, never giving up hope or love for me. I wonder how many other strugglers - hundreds? thousands? - he invested time in over the years.Slide4

Brent SlaterGod may grace our paths, once in a lifetime, with a mentor like Dr. Grounds. The wonder of this giant, humble servant is the number of us who experienced his personal mentoring. Each of us was held in his heart. For each of us his door was always open. We were never on a list of his. We were his dear friends. How could he pour his life so intimately and deeply into so many of us? This never ceased to amaze me.Gary BonebrakeDr. Vernon Grounds was our president, our teacher, our pastor, our mentor, our prophet, our example. Dr. Grounds’ teaching, personal attention and concern for my wife and me changed our lives. He was always available to us. In spite of his many responsibilities, he would make time for a breakfast conversation or an evening visit to our basement apartment.CEVSlide5

Clay WarrenDr. Grounds had the uncanny ability to meet thousands of students and still make each one feel as if he or she was unique and individually loved.Slide6

David DonaldsonWhat made being a student in Dr. Ground's classes such a memorable experience was knowing I was loved. He was the father I never had. It laid the foundation for profound healing on which others built in succeeding years.Would you like to be a person like Dr. Grounds?Slide7

How, Dr. Grounds?• He made, he found time for people.Bob MoffittBy far, the high points of my seminary experience were the hours Dr. Grounds gently listened to my questions about life direction over coffee at local restaurants. He never advised this way or that. Instead he asked probing questions.Slide8

How, Dr. Grounds?Charles BonnetAt this time in my life, I was enduring much struggle and pain. Dr. Grounds sat me down and listened. He didn't know me. He just sat there and loved me with the love of Christ. I'll never forget this. He ministered to me spontaneously, deeply, and sincerely. God bless him.Slide9

Listening...Why is listening so helpful?Gary HoagEverywhere I went as Vice President of Advancement at Denver Seminary (2002-2009), I met people whose lives were shaped and inspired by Dr. Grounds. When I asked him how he did it, he shared his secret for administering spiritual direction in the lives of people: "Ask them questions, Gary, to help them discern what God may be saying to them."

Why does it make us feel loved?Slide10

God, the Almighty Creator, Infinite in Power, in Holiness...We are less than a speck of dust. But he listens to us...Slide11

God listens to us...Ex. 3:7   The LORD said: I have seen how my people are suffering as slaves in Egypt, and I have heard them beg for my help because of the way they are being mistreated. I feel sorry for them, 8 and I have come down to rescue them from the Egyptians.2Sam. 22:7 I was in terrible trouble when I called out to you, but from your temple you heard me and answered my prayer.Slide12

He listens!Psa. 40:1  I patiently waited, LORD for you to hear my prayer. You listened 2 and pulled me from a lonely pit full of mud and mire. You let me stand on a rock with my feet firm,

3 and you gave me a new song, a song of praise to you.

Jer. 29:10

This is what the LORD says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place.

11

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

12

Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and

I will listen to you

.

13

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.Slide13

God asks us to listen - to Him, to othersDeut. 30:20 and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Loving God - listening to Him

Loving others - listening to them

James 1:19

My dear friends, you should be quick to listen and slow to speak or to get angry. Slide14

“The first service one owes to others in fellowship consists of listening to them. Just as love of God begins with listening to His Word, so the beginning of love for the brethren (sisters and children) is learning to listen to them.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer“The gift of being a good listener, a gift which requires constant practice, is perhaps the most healing gift anyone can possess, for it allows the other to be, enfolds them in a safe place, does not judge or advise, them accepts them as they are without desiring to change them, and communicates support at a level deeper than words.” - Gerald Hughes SJ, Walk to JerusalemListening to others...Slide15

Listen to two listening sessions...A: Did I do a good job of listening? How did you feel as I listened?B: Did I do a good job of listening? How did you feel as I listened?Slide16

Principles of ListeningPut aside your own concerns, focus on the speaker, seek to deeply understand them.Listen to the whole person - not just words: tone, body language, feelings, silences, thinking, relationships, lifestyle

Keep confidences: ask if you feel the need to talk with another about what is shared.Slide17

Principles of ListeningDon’t offer advice - let the speaker make her/his own decisions. If asked for advice, ask “what do you think would be best?”Don’t ask too many questions. Ask questions to help the speaker clarify, not probe.

Listen to feeling words. Maybe reflect/repeat them so speaker “hears themselves.”Slide18

Why is advice giving to be avoided? We can’t know what is going on deep inside another person, what they really need.Advice giving suggests the other is weak and can’t do for themselves.

Change comes when we want to. We have to come to our own decision before we’ll act.

Being loved and believed in helps us, encourages us to try. Slide19

Dr Grounds:...his secret for administering spiritual direction in the lives of people: "Ask them questions, Gary, to help them discern what God may be saying to them."Practice!

Pair up: “A” and “B” A - 4 minutes - share one thing that has struck you so far - B - listen with full attention. Say nothing except “listening cues.”Slide20

Questions to ask after listening:What do you think is most important in what you shared? Is there anything you’d like to Do about it? What are you feeling at this moment about what you have just shared?A and B switch roles.Slide21

Thoughts? Questions?Slide22

When I ask you to listen...Grandmother and Hilary’s desire to...Slide23

Share prayer request with your partner:What do you need Jesus to do for you today?Slide24
