Gatep osts 10 - Inch Afghan Square By Diana Troldahl, Otterwise Designs The intriguing texture of this stitch pattern was invented by the great Barbara Walker . Like most knit and purl patterns it is easy for beginners to accomplish yet interesting for more advanced k nitters, too. The block was designed to fit the requirements of Wool - Aid (www.wool - aid.org) Materials: #7 needle or size to obtain gauge 90 yards of worsted weght yarn (sample used Knt Pcks Wool of the Andes Tweed n ‘Dll’) 2 stitch markers Gauge: 4.5 stitches per inch after blocking, in pattern stitch Abbreviations *…* - Repeat directions inside * and * across row k – knit p – purl pm - place marker Rem - remain RS – right side, public side sm - slip marker WS – wrong side, non - public side The Importance of Blocking (the side - to - side measurement grew by 2 inches) © 2012 by Diana Troldahl Gateposts Block p. 1 Otterwise.com, otterwise@gmail.com Cast on 46 stitches using long tail method. Knit 10 rows (5 garter ridges) then go to set - up row: Set up Row : K 5 , purl 36, k5 . Go to pattern rows. Pattern rows: Row 1 (RS): k5, pm, *p1, k2, p6, k2, p1* until 5 sts rem, pm, k to end. Row 2 (WS): k5, sm, *k1, p2, k6, p2, k1* to marker, sm, k to end. R ow 3: k5, sm, *p1, k10, p1* to marker, sm, k to end. Row 4: k5, sm, * k1, p10, k1* to marker, sm, k to end. Row 5: k5, sm, *k5, p2, k5* to marker, sm, k to end. Row 6: k5, sm, *p5, k2, p5* to marker, sm, k to end. Row 7: k5, sm, *p3, k2, p2, k2, p3* to m arker, sm, k to end. Row 8: k5, sm, *k3, p2, k2, p2, k3* to marker, sm, k to end. Row 9: Repeat Row 5 Row 10: Repeat Row 6 Row 11: Repeat Row 3 Row 12: Repeat Row 4 Work rows 1 through 12 a total of 5 times. Work Rows 1 and 2 once more. Knit 10 rows (5 ridges) in garter stitch, then bind off.
