Chuck Greene’s Workshop “Compellingly Attractive Chapter Meetings” LOL Leadership Academy January 7-8, 2011 University of Wisconsin – River Falls What is it? Chuck Greene, a 41-year Society member from North Carolina, has put together a dynamic training program that is designed to rejuvenate barbershop chapters for music and membership growth. The title of his program is “Where Barbershop 7th Chords Intersect the 21st Century.” The workshop “Compellingly Attractive Chapter Meetings” is the first workshop in Chuck’s program. This will be offered at the January 2011 Leadership Academy at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls. Rather than waiting for silver bullets from Nashville and elsewhere, it shows chapters what they can do with their own resources to turn things around. It has been offered at Harmony University for several years as well as other locations around the country. Everyone who has participated in Chuck’s workshop gives it rave reviews. How is it different from other membership/music initiatives? Chuck puts the emphasis on our weekly chapter meetings as the way to build up everything we are trying to do in terms of music development and membership growth. It’s one thing to get new members in the door, but what can we do to get them excited and involved and eager to come back each week. That’s the membership retention part of his workshop. In Chuck’s own words, he will show us “how to infuse chapter meetings with creativity, education, efficiency, and progress and fun through impressive participative leadership methods.” His approach is based on the idea that society has changed, and things that worked for us 20-30 years ago are not going to work as well today. Chuck adds, “Compellingly attractive chapter meetings are the heartbeat of viability and the perquisite for growth.” He will provide and demonstrate over thirty new tools and activities based on the new priorities. One of these tools is how to cut song learning time by at least one half. Who should attend Chuck’s workshop? Music Director Assistant Music Director Music & Performance VP Section Leader(s) President Membership VP Program VP Best pure leader in a chapter, even if this person does not currently hold a title Where does the workshop fit in the Leadership Academy Schedule? The workshop is an 8-hour session on Saturday, January 8th. Participants will receive a binder of materials to take back to their chapters to put the ideas into practice. What should your chapter do now? You can start by going to Chuck’s website and browsing through the wide range of ideas and materials that he uses. The address is www.21stn7th.com . When you’re there, take the time to read his position paper “Resurgence of the Barbershop Harmony Society.” In this 82-page paper Chuck has tapped into the best literature on change in our society and he has applied it to the barbershop harmony setting. Secondly, you should now start promoting The Leadership Academy and Chuck’s class at every opportunity within your chapter. Then identify at least 2-4 fellows from your chapter to send to Chuck’s workshop. The more guys you send, the more powerful will be the message and the ideas that they will bring back to your chapter. One last testimonial for Chuck’s workshop: “The workshop was as well planned as any I’ve seen – barbershop or professionally. It was fast-paced, logical, innovative, and participatory. It was an eye-opener for everyone. I highly recommend the program. It’s a fresh approach to revitalizing our hobby. And it was a heck of a lot of FUN!”
