Including All Authors Considering the Accessibility of an Authoring Tool

What We Will Cover Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines—ATAG 2.0 Common Barriers to Accessibility Test Cases Your Thoughts? Where Can We Go from Here?

What We Won’t Cover A comprehensive review of ATAG success criteria Checklists for ATAG reviews

Take These with You: Basic issues for authors Challenges for tool developers Ways to help improve the situation: In open source projects In commercial tools

Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines—ATAG 2.0 Tools must be accessible to use. Tools must support the creation of accessible content. Details: http://www.w3.org/TR/ATAG20 /

Accessible to use: As in WCAG, editing controls must be: Perceivable: Can a screen reader detect the available options? Operable: Even without a mouse? Understandable: Is context always clear ?

Supports accessibility: How much is automatically accessible ? When humans must decide: Are the right options available? Is good advice available? Are checking tools or processes built in?

Drupal: An Accessible CMS Platform Initial efforts: 2008 Two goals: An accessible tool An aid to creating accessible content

Is Drupal accessible? Test site : An homage to using Word smarter Site administration: Can you navigate without a mouse (or trackpad)? Can you operate it with a screen reader? Content creation: (Same 2 questions)

Common Barriers to Accessible Authoring Often due to Visual-First Design: Galleries Selection Grids Drag and drop interfaces

Galleries Arrays of thumbnail images of the format applied. Examples from MS Office: Quick Styles: Table Styles:

Selection Grids Arrays of colors or patterns. Examples from MS Office: Color palette: Pattern selector: (demo)

Audience Participation In Word, using only the keyboard, do one : Use Quick Styles to apply a new style to a word or paragraph. Use a selection grid to do either one of these: Change text color Add a patterned background

What did we learn? Was each feature: Perceivable? Operable? Understandable? The features: Quick Styles? Text color? Patterned background ?

Focus on the tool, not each feature. Not this: Is Quick Styles: Perceivable? Operable? Understandable? But this: Is an available way: Perceivable? Operable? Understandable?

The tool, not each feature. Not this: Is the color grid: Perceivable? Operable? Understandable? But this: Is an available way to change color: Perceivable? Operable? Understandable?

The tool, not each feature. Not this: Is the pattern selector: Perceivable? Operable? Understandable? But this: Is an available way to choose patterns: Perceivable? Operable? Understandable?

Where Can We Go from Here? Can we make it better? Participate in open source projects Give vendors feedback File bugs

Open Source Projects Drupal: https://drupal.org Test features File issues Give developers feedback Write code (if you can) Write or edit user guides: https ://drupal.org/contribute/documentation

Give Vendors Feedback Microsoft: www.microsoft.com/accessibility Barriers? Report to Disability Answer Desk: https:// support.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/disability-answer-desk Ideas for new features? Contact UserVoice : https:// microsoftaccessibility.uservoice.com/forums/307429-microsoft-accessibility-feedback

Take This Home: Accessibility isn’t just about the content we create—it’s about the tools, too. Test your authoring tools. Focus on functionality: a way , not necessarily the same way . Participate! Give vendors your feedback. Questions?
