MAIDA DEVELOPMENT COMPANY
INTRODUCTION I Family owned and operated since 1947, with continuous Administration, Sales, Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Manufacturing in Hampton, VA. Founded as a supplier of tubular capacitors. Maida capacitor products now include a variety of components, with specific expertise in high voltage (6KV-45KV) designs. Developed a metal oxide varistor product line in the late 1970s. Today Maida offers a full line of over voltage and over current protection components.Maida components are recognized by UL, CSA, and VDE. ly owned and operated since 1947.high voltage disk capacitors (6KVDC - 30 KVDC).
CORE COMPETENCIES Ceramic Powder Formulations – capacitors and varistors Customization – component configurations to meet customer requirements Engineering Ongoing research and developmentCustomer design assistanceState of the art test facilitiesUnderstanding safety agency requirements UL “CTDP” approved UL “Standards Technical Panel” member Sourcing, Stocking, and Supply Chain Solutions to meet customer delivery requirements
Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV)
Topics What is an MOV? How does it work? Examples of Applications Selecting MOVsHigh Volume Market Examples
Description Varistors are voltage dependent non-linear devices with an electrical behavior similar to back to back zener diodes. When exposed to a transient voltage, the varistor’s impedance changes from open circuit to conductive and diverts the current to ground.
Electrical Behavior Varistor VI Characteristics
Electrical Behavior The varistor also limits or “clamps” the voltage peak to a safe level for the equipment being protected. Voltage transient
What are Transients and Risks? Fast rising voltage surges, reaching their peak in µs. Associated current surge up to 2-3ms in duration. Risks are: Semiconductor device destructionMalfunction of logic circuitsDiminished dielectric strength of insulationsImpaired electromechanical contacts
Causes of Transients Lightning Inductive Switching Electrostatic Discharge Electromagnetic Pulse
TYPICAL Current Division of a 20KA Lightning Strike
Where Is Transient Voltage Surge Suppression Needed? Ground fault circuit interrupters Power supplies Communication equipment Microprocessor protectionMotor control systemsCable TV systemsMedical equipmentStreet lightingAutomotive circuitsTraffic control facilitiesMicrowave devices Computers AC operated smoke detectors
Construction Disc Material ( ZnO + additives) Lead wire (Tin plated copper) Epoxy Coating (UL 94V-0) Electrode Area (screen-printed, fired-on silver ink)
Construction Thickness = Voltage rating Diameter = Energy rating Volume = Power rating
Selecting the Varistor Requires knowledge of the electrical environment. Approximations usually are made. Assessments may need to be made by a design engineer.
Selecting the Varistor Determine the steady-state working voltage of the circuit . AC rating - maximum continuous sinusoidal voltage that may be applied, including any high line fluctuations. DC rating - max. continuous DC voltage that may be applied - typically about 95% of the peak recurrent AC voltage. Determine the Power rating needed for the component. Determine the size needed for the application.
Selecting- Define circuit capabilities < 7 mm: -On PC board protections( <2A). < 14mm: -AC power input of small size device( < 10A). < 20mm: -AC power input of medium size device( < 25A). > 32mm: -Circuit breaker at building entrances or input side of high current devices( >25A).
Selecting- Load capabilities Clamping voltage is the voltage that the MOV allows the protected system to “see”, also known as voltage passed. Clamping voltage required depends upon the system protected. Refer to V-I Curves.
