Predestination

Our purpose for this time is that at the end of the series you will see and savior God and increasing our understanding an of who He is and what He has done for us. Slide2

Election

God’s choice to save certain individuals

Predestination

means that our final destination, heaven or hell, was determined in advanced.

Three basic views:

God is the primary chooser

We are the primary choosers

Both God and humans choose without creating a contradiction.Slide3

Is God the one who chooses?

God chooses who will be saved and our human choice plays no part at all in this decision.

Romans 9:15-16, Acts 4:28, Eph 1:4-5, Rev 13:8

Before time began, God chose who would accept and follow Christ-Eph 1:5,11

Then He draws those same individuals until they come to Him-John 6:37

Before the foundation of the world, God chose the elect, and our choosing to come to Christ later in time is the result of God’s choice and no part of the cause of our salvation. Slide4

Am I the one who chooses?

God’s

choice is based on what He knows we will choose. We make the ultimate decision whether to accept the free gift of salvation, and God simply honors our choice. Because God can see the future, He knows in advance who will freely come to Christ and He “predestines them. Rom 8:28-29

Revelation 22:17, Matt 18:3-4, John 14:1

Any individual can be saved. It is a gift freely offered to all. If some are elected by God before the foundation of the world, it must be based on the free choice that God knows they are going to make. Slide5

Do both God and I choose?

1 Corinthians 2:7-the exact way these choices interact is a mystery.

Somehow it must be true that both god has the final say in who will be saved and also that our free choice plays a crucial role. Another way to think of this might be to say that God is in overall control of history and each person’s life, but has left pockets of free choice within His sovereignty.

A believer can hold any three views or even not even care about the debate and still be a genuine Christian. Persuasion-level issue.
