A dvertisement early 1700s when Robert and William Cor, members of the bell foundry family in Aldbourne, England, are said to have developed tuned hand Hand-bell choirs have been popular for church music groups because of their broad appeal. "It's one of the ministries where someone of any age, gender or ability can make it work. There isn't a `bell-type' person. We always find ringers and they usually say, `I've always wanted to try that,"' Geeslin said. "After one lesson, most people could participate in the peal. It's instant Now, there are five ensembles that play bells at the church. It has two sets of bells that are used regularly, one three-octave and one five-octave. The hand bells are made out of bronze and have hinged clappers. They are laid out like a keyboard on tables covered with padding before they are played. Ringers wear white gloves so the oil from their hands doesn't tarnish the bells. Members rotate along the tables so that each plays at all positions of the table. "The sight of the choreography, the swinging, is not artificial," Moore said. "What you see is necessary to what you hear. There's just sheer fun about watching the exuberance. It's a joyful time." Alchemy's next scheduled appearance is at the 10 a.m. Sunday service and a 5 p.m. concert June 1 at Prince of Peace. Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, 5700 Rudnick Ave., Woodland Hills.
