importance. As Tim Keller put it, appointed prophet standing on a street corner, wearing a sandwich board sign that reads, ÒRepent! The end is near.Ó It conjures up images of an old-time, sweat-soaked, pointy-fingered, Bible-thumping, pulpit-pounding preacher hurling verbal fire and brimstone, and shouting at the top of his lung, ÒRepent, you wretched, wretched sinners!Ó Too bad that word has accumulated such baggage. ItÕs a good word. ItÕs a Bible word. ItÕs a word used by the prophets, by John the Baptist, and by Jesus in His very first sermon. Repent is a good wordÑa necessary word. ItÕs part of the good news of the gospel. You canÕt be saved without it. ÒWhat? I thought all I had to do was believe. I thought Listen to Jesus: Jesus gives us repentance and faith as a gift. Sin is an affront to our holy God. ItÕs high treason against our Maker and our Redeemer. It grieves the Holy Spirit of God in our lives. JesusÕ call to repentance gives our sin some size, lest we think it some minor nuisance or insignificant character flaw. Our sins a Repentance then says, And then the third stanza in this repentant refrain: ÒWith your help, Father, IÕll change.Ó ThatÕs the real proof of repentance. True repentance produces fruit and deeds in keeping with that repentance (Matt. 3:8; Acts In other words, if my repentance is real, then there will be changes in my life. None of this lip I bow down on my knees and I repent. 4Brian H.
