1978 US EPA initiated a laboratory certification program for drinking water testing and delegated authority for operation of the program to state agencies. Many states expanded this program to include other environmental matrices Eventually a National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) was established with state participation being voluntary.Jerry Parr, TNI, 10/20/2008Background on the Issue KHEL | What’s up with Laboratory Certification?

All KDHE Division of Environment regulatory programs (except Air) require data to be generated by a laboratory certified by the KDHE (Office of Laboratory Services/KHEL). Kansas implemented a two tier certification system. Field Laboratory Certification and NELAC certification. Kansas currently utilizes the 2003 TNI standard as the basis for their environmental laboratory certification program. Expecting to upgrade to the 2016 version of the standard this next year. What about Kansas? KHEL | What’s up with Laboratory Certification?

Certification of laboratories is an important part of the protection of public and environmental health. Kansas strives to ensure that all data meets certain criteria by implementing a standardized certification program. Certification is one part of an overall quality program to ensure data is of known and defensible quality. SummaryKHEL | What’s up with Laboratory Certification ?
