Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae Opportunistic pathogen or “commensal” respiratory bacterium Typically carried by host with no obvious consequence (+/- subclinical impact) Infects, carried by, or has been detected in….. Caprinae (sheep, goats, muskox) Capreolinae deer family: mule, white tail, caribou, moose) Bison (Montana, Idaho), antelope (Qatar), cattle (Colorado ) Disease Pneumonia, sinusitis, otitis (middle ear infection) May compromise host’s airways/lungs to more virulent bacteria ( Pasteurellaceae bacteria, Trueperella , other)

Why investigate M. ovipneumoniae prevalence in goats? Coughing syndrome, atypical pneumonia in small ruminants B ighorn sheep respiratory disease complex – the importance (and sensitivity) of this bacterium P rimary infectious agent of respiratory disease Goats considered a transmission source of M. ovipneumoniae to wild small ruminants Limitations on grazing and weed/brush clearing Restrictions/limitations for pack goat use in Western United States Proposals to ban or heighten regulations on small ruminants in Alaska Social pressures placed on small ruminant owners
