The Professional Action Network’s (PAN) Concluded Need
Students in Eastern Kentucky needed to connect with others outside of their immediate environment.
Elementary school students needed some Spanish lessons, to help “jump start” their learning
Students needed reinforcement of their Spanish lessons for application outside of the classroom. Slide4
The “Grita Fuerte
” Holler
The Holler Fellows PAN developed the “
Grita
Fuerte
” Holler to allow cross-county communication between Spanish classes in Eastern Kentucky.
Students had various days in which the students in Floyd, Knott, and Harlan Counties would communicate and introduce themselves via the “
Grita
Fuerte” Holler. Students were even able to share videos of lessons, or presentations of their hard work when they wished (i.e. daily routines, Dia de los Muertos, etc.). All students had to communicate with each other and introduce themselves. Slide5

The Holler -- A Place-Based Social Learning Platform
What is “the Holler”?
The Holler’s place-based platform combines elements of social media and gaming (ie. badges, points, and the leaderboard). This makes it second nature to teenagers who spend the bulk of their days interacting and creating content on social media and gaming sites. As KVEC Director Dr. Jeff Hawkins says “exploiting the inevitable” makes the Holler a custom platform, by design, for high school aged learners in Central Appalachia.

Feedback from Livestream Participant in Harlan County
“The Holler provides us students with a way to share and discuss what we’re learning with other classrooms across the region,” said HCHS sophomore Deryn Shoemaker. “It even proves to be a safe way to make new friends online through intellectual conversations. I think the idea is genius.”Slide10
