Vocabulary: WEEK TWO Quiz Friday!!

1. Circumference (noun) size of something as given by the distance around it Example: The circumference of all five lakes combined is 10,500 miles, nearly half the distance around the world.

2. Commotion (noun) The act of making a noisy disturbance Example: A passenger noticed the commotion in the next car and called the police.

3. Concoction (noun) The act of creating something by mixing a variety of components Example: It is a rich concoction of dark chocolate, strawberries, and milk.

4. Conspicuous (Adj.) Obvious to the eye or mind Example: Homelessness is conspicuous ; the poverty rate is a stubbornly high 20%.

5. Contortion (Noun) A twisted shape or position Example: The contortions of her face as she cried deeply troubled her friends.

6. Counter (Verb) Deal with ahead of time; speak in response Example: He also countered the doubters who dogged him early in the games.

7. Cunning (adj.) Showing inventiveness and skill Example: He was a 215-pound professional football player, a cunning brute.

8. Debris (noun) The remains of something that has been destroyed or broken up Example: Where other might have seen piles of rusted debris fit for a junkyard, Beth saw art.

9. Deft (Adj.) Skillful in physical movements; especially of the hands Example: Altogether, the fossils suggested a deft climber who also walked on two legs.

10. Trifling (noun/ADJ.) Not worth considering; deliberate act of delaying instead of working Example: Losing a library book is no trifling matter.
