What are Cross Sections?

Cross Sections are defined as the shape we get when cutting straight through an object. They can be determined by how the cross section flows…whether vertically or horizontally.

Horizontal cross section: a slice that runs between the bases.

Vertical cross section: a slice that runs from base to base.Diagonal cross section: a slice that is neither vertical or horizontal, but runs from corner to corner.Slide3

Key Vocabulary

Base: not always the bottom; shape that defines the prism or pyramid.

Vertex: top of a pyramid (where the point is).

Parallel to the Base: same direction as the base.Perpendicular to the Base: forms a 90° angle to the base.Horizontal: parallel to the base.Vertical: perpendicular to the base.Diagonal: straight line joining two opposite corners.Slide4
