Sport provides a wonderful opportunity to develop life skills in young people – these include behavioural standards.
As a coach it is important that these behavioural standards are not dictated to the young athletes, research has shown that when young people are involved with setting behavioural standards they are more likely to stick by them.
Take some time to review the behavioural standards set by your club and ask yourself:
Do we have defined standards and expectations? Were the athletes involved with establishing these standards and behaviours? Are the consistently enforced? It is important that coaches avoid telling young athletes the standards and expectations of the club, but agree standards such as: Time keepingBehaviourLanguageConduct

ESTABLISHING AN ATHLETE COMMITTE
By establishing an athletes’ committee, this creates a link between the athletes and the coaches and crucially gives some ownership, responsibility and to the athletes within your club.
When setting standards and behaviours, having the athletes’ committee involved with this process helps to ensure that both coaches and athletes understand the standards that are expected of them – by having a joint understanding significantly increases the likelihood that the standards will be adhered to.
