CLASSROOM ACCOUNTABILITY Mrs. Mayfield Language & Writing 5 th Grade, Ashville Middle School

E N T E R I N G T H E R O O M 5 th Grade changes classes on the second bell, 5 minutes after the upper grades. Use this time wisely to get your materials for this class. You should come into the classroom in a timely manner, sit quietly in your assigned seat, and begin working on board assignments quickly. Tardiness should not be a problem as a 5 th grade student as teachers are monitoring & classes are changing together.

M A T E R I A L S Each day, I will post on the door what is needed for class. You should always bring your binder, pencil pouch, and library books. It is your responsibility to keep 5 pencils sharpened at all times. There will be time in homeroom each morning to sharpen pencils. Student art boxes will be passed around on the homeroom teacher cart as needed.

L O C K E R S Student lockers are a privilege and should be taken care of and protected by the student. Do not give your combination to anyone else. These cannot be changed. Students will be released to go to their lockers in shifts (bottom lockers, then middle lockers, vice versa). If a student forgets supplies, he or she may return to the hallway at the teacher’s discretion.

C L A S S R O O M S U P P L I E S If I allow you to use any classroom supplies, it is up to you to take care of the materials and put them up neatly. When classroom supplies are abused, you lose the privilege to use them. Student supplies should be stored in their lockers, not left in the desks.

S T U D E N T W O R K Student work should be completed neatly, in pencil, unless otherwise specified. If I cannot read your writing, you will have to redo the assignment. Every paper should be properly headed (see classroom poster). D O I T N I C E, O R D O I T T W I C E. Student work should be turned in to their period’s tray on the counter, unless otherwise specified by Mrs. Mayfield.

N O N A M E B A S K E T Putting your name on your paper is important! Someone else could easily claim your work if it is nameless. Papers turned in with no name will be placed in the NO NAME basket. Once you identify your work, put your name on it and place it in the late/make up work basket so a grade can be given. Points will be taken from the final grade.

H O M E W O R K Homework will be assigned from time to time in our class. Notification of this will be documented on the board for students to copy in their agendas. Remind texts will also be sent by the teacher as needed. Homework will be graded for completion. Please check the board for directions on how to turn it in.

I N C O M P L E T E / L A T E W O R K Incomplete assignments may be completed & turned in with a loss of points per day late. You may be pulled during PE or Exploratory by Mrs. Mayfield or a resource teacher to make up missing work if it accumulates.

A B S E N T W O R K Students have two days per EXCUSED day missed to make up work per the SCCBOE Code of Conduct. It is the responsibility of the student to check the makeup basket for any missing assignments and get notes from a responsible classmate. If a student is absent for a prolonged period of time, I will be glad to gather work once contacted by the parent.

G R A D E D P A P E R S All graded work will be sent home on Wednesdays in the green communication folder. After being returned, these will be stored in the student’s homeroom class.

S E A T I N G A R R A N G E M E N T S Students should be seated in their assigned space daily. Do not swap desks with other students. Never sit in a different desk just because a student is absent. Substitute teachers will be made aware of seating charts.

I N T E R C O M / V I S I T O R S Anytime the intercom comes on you should be listening to the speaker. Do not be disruptive or disrespectful during this time. If a visitor enters our classroom, you should continue working silently at your desk and listen for instructions from the teacher.

R E S T R O O M We will take restroom breaks as a class. If an emergency arises, you must use a pass to leave the classroom. Please report any misbehavior in the restroom in a timely manner. As teachers, we cannot effectively handle situations when they are not reported immediately. Respect the facilities and privacy of other students.

E M E R G E N C Y D R I L L S Intruder: Someone will announce, “Lockdown.” We will move quickly and silently to the area near the counter/teacher desk. You must not talk or make noise until an all clear is given by someone announcing, “The French Club meeting for today has been cancelled.” Do not open doors for anyone. Do not prop open outside doors. Fire: Wait for instruction from the teacher. With approval, we will line up quickly & silently, exit the room to the right and go outside. Stay in line. Listen for roll call. Tornado: We will grab a lit textbook from under the counter, line up quickly & silently, and go out to the hall as instructed. Kneel down & cover your head with the textbook. Remain quiet and listen for roll call and further instructions.

H A L L W A Y Anytime we are in the hallway, you must remain quiet in line. Do not disrupt neighboring classrooms or activities. Walk in an orderly fashion on the right side of the hallway.

T E X T B O O K S / W O R K B O O K S Textbooks will not be assigned to students. They will remain in the classroom to use as needed. If you miss an assignment that requires a book, you may see me to sign one out. Textbooks and workbooks must not be written in. These are shared among all 5 th grade classes.

N O T E B O O K S Each student needs a composition notebook. This will be the primary way of taking grammar/writing notes to use for studying. Do not tear out pages. Please number assignments accordingly. If absent, borrow a responsible student’s notebook to get the assignment completed. These will be graded periodically to make sure they are up to date.

C O M P U T E R L A B / C A R T When we go to the computer lab, you should sit at your assigned computer (class number). Always use the same computer/iPad unless instructed otherwise. Use both hands to transport devices to and from the cart. Place the device in the correct slot and make sure it is plugged up. Use of these devices is a privilege and internet use is monitored closely by the Technology Dept. of SCCBOE.

L I B R A R Y When we go to the library you should follow instructions from Mrs. Carlisle and Ms. Gandy. You should fill all seats at the tables before going to the sitting area by the fish tank. When going alone to the library, you should go straight there and back. Do not linger or go to the restroom, nurse, office, etc. without a pass from the teacher. Going to the library alone is a privilege.

G R O U P S We will frequently work in groups. It is your responsibility to work cooperatively. Each group member should be working on a task and contributing to the group in order to receive a passing grade for the assignment. If you are having problems with a classmate in your group, please speak with me privately to resolve the issue.

B E HA V I O R Your teacher will carry a behavior clip board for the class. Offenses will be recorded as a way for teachers to communicate. Multiple offenses will result in consequences at the teacher’s discretion: warning, private conference, silent lunch, written assignment, parent contact, detention, office referral.

A T T E N D A N C E It is so important that you attend school EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Your attendance has a big impact on your learning and the success of the class as a whole.
