Definition of Grief

Definition of Disenfranchised Grief

In the literature: When there are unexpected NICU outcomes and loss, Mosher (2017) said these can have lasting effect on nurses, leading to post traumatic stress, depression, burnout, symptoms of pain and loss, and lifelong memories of the event. Nurses witness much pain, suffering, and distress, over time, multiple losses that are not well-supported could take their toll on the nurse.

Neimeyer & Anderson in 2002 described the death of an infant as an enduring and painful bereavement experience for parents. Nurses who provide end-of-life care for dying infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are best situated to help parents cope with the loss of their infants in this time of grief (Lassen, 2016). However, NICU nurses have been shown to experience personal grief from the loss of their infant patients (Kain, 2013; Romesberg, 2004) despite not having a personal relationship with the infant patients themselves.
