MUSICAL INSTRUMENT DIGITAL INTERFACESlide3
MIDI is a protocol designed for recording and playing back music on digital synthesizer that is supported by many makes of personal computer sound cards. Originally intended to control one key board from another, it was quickly adopted for the personal computer, Rather than representing musical sound directly , it transmits information about how music is produced. The command set includes note-
ons
, note-offs, key velocity, pitch bend and other method of controlling a synthesizer. The sound waves produced are those already stored in a wavetable in the receiving instrument or sound card.Slide4
MIDI-controller
The term MIDI Controller is used in two different ways. A MIDI controller can be defined as hardware or software that is able to transmit MIDI messages via a MIDI out connector to other device with MIDI in connector. In the other, more technical sense, a MIDI controller is a parameter that can be controlled remotely through MIDI control change messages.Slide5
Advantages
MIDI files are tiny, often 10K or less.
They download from a web page in no time and fit easily on a floppy disk. MIDI files are ideal any time you want music to start playing immediately.Slide6
Disadvantages
Because they sound a little different when played in different sound cards, there is no guarantee that those lush horns won’t sound like blaring trumpets on the next guy’s machine. Making universal MIDI files is a combination of art, skill and experience.Slide7
APPLICATIONS
The two organization responsible for the creation and oversight of MIDI standard, the US MIDI manufactures association (MMA) and Japan associations of musical electronics industries (AMEI) have jointly standardized many extensions to it. General MIDI (GM) is one of these, and attempt by the MMA to create standardized map of instrument
programme
numbers. Slide8
AMEI members developed general MIDI level 2 (GM2), which increased the number of available instruments, specified additional message responses, and standardized map of instrument
programme
numbers. GM2 is the basis of the instrument selectio0n mechanism in scalable polyphony MIDI (SP-MIDI), a MIDI variant for mobile application.Slide9
