Today we will acquire and use academic vocabulary It is important to continue expanding our vocabulary and to ensure we use words correctly Objective Rationale Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression. (7.L.6)

Adequate (adj) Enough; sufficient One serving of broccoli provides an adequate amount of vitamin C for the day.

administer (verb) To manage or direct Mrs. Villamar will administer the math test next week.To give out as treatment or assistanceShe will administer tutoring before the test.

Agitate (verb) To disturb or upset Water agitates the cat. To move with an irregular, fast, or violent actionThe washing machine was put on delicate, so it would agitate gently.To stir up interest in and support for a cause Though the American colonist agitated for more power and independence, King George III was deaf to their demands.

capitulate (verb) To give in; to surrender King George III refused to capitulate to the colonist demands, forcing them to revolt.

Making connections What is something that is adequate in your life?What is something you could administer ? Who agitates you the most? What is the last argument you capitulated on? What is your favorite citrus ? What kind of disruption annoys you the most? Where might you find a hovel ? Do you know anyone who is illiterate ? Are you going to be indifferent to your grades this quarter?

Urgent (adj ) Urgency (noun) Needing quick action or attention. There are porta-potties on the beach for those who have an urgent need to go.The need for quick action. I don’t care for germs, but I’ll use the porta-potties in cases of urgency .

toil (verb/noun) To work hard and long Children in other countries are forced to toil all day long.To make one’s way with difficulty.The young boys toiled using only a carpet knife. ( noun ) Hard and tiring labor. The young boy worked seven years before receiving a respite from his toil .

strenuous (adj ) Needing much effort; using a lot of energy. The kids thought cleaning the house was extremely strenuous.Very active; vigorous.The kids gave a strenuous objection when asked to do chores without getting an allowance.

respite (noun) A period of rest; a pause. The rain brought a welcomed respite from the tremendous heat.

Permanent (adj ) Lasting or expected to last for a long time. Unfortunately, the tattoo was permanent.

Menial (adj) Of or relating to low-level humble work Desperate to make money, Oliver accepted menial work with low pay.
