Quotation marks (“ ”), also known as speech marks, have several uses.
They show direct speech (e.g. “Come here,” asked Eric), the titles of works (e.g. She sang “Happy Birthday” beautifully) and mark special words or phrases (e.g. His opinion was “use it or lose it”).
Single quotation marks (‘ ’) may be used instead of double quotation marks, but both types are needed to show quotes within quotes (e.g. “Carlos just said, ‘She’ll be there’,” I replied.
