Gum disease – caused by plaque bacteria (germs) left on the teeth and gums for too long by not cleaning properlyTooth decay – caused by eating too much sugar too frequently throughout the day + plaque bacteria that has not been cleaned off the teeth and gums thoroughly enough

Water is much healthier to drink than soda or sugary drinks

Smoking causes staining of the teeth and bad breath.Smoking makes gum disease worse.Alcohol and smoking are the main causes of oral cancer.

By not smoking, reducing alcohol and having a good diet we can reduce the risk of:
Heart disease and strokes
Lung Disease
Diabetes
Cancer
Tooth decay and infection

Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste (help children)
Spit out toothpaste but do not rinse it away
Reduce amount and frequency of sugar
Avoid sugary snacks between meals
Eat healthy food and drinks
Do not smoke or chew tobacco
Get your mouth checked regularly and visit a clinical officer or dentist if you have a problem.
