2022/2023 Q1 & Q2 Quarterly Reports to the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation 15 February 2023 Contents 2 DIRCO’s 2022/2023 Quarter 1 & 2 Report on: Performance information; and Financial information. Introduction The report is front loaded with performance information on our core function under Programme 2 - 4 to enable the Department to highlight key issues and achievements in the implementation of South Africa’s Foreign Policy; The compliance issues under Programme 1 reflect at the end in order to showcase how the Department supports its core function; The department has achieved 100% (representing 21 of the 21 targets set for Quarter 1); The department has achieved 100% (representing 23 of the 23 targets set for Quarter 2). 3 Summary of Achievements: Programme 2 Overall achievement: 100% (3) Achievement for Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 100%(4) 4 Programme 2: International Relations During Quarter 1 & 2, the Department continued to use bilateral engagements as instruments to pursue South Africa’s National Interest. These included structured bilateral mechanisms, high-level visits and economic diplomacy initiatives undertaken by our Missions abroad and at Head Office; Building on the work embarked on during previous quarters, the engagements undertaken during the reporting period focused on DIRCO’s contribution to tackling the persistent triple challenges of inequality, unemployment and poverty, as faced by South Africans in particular and on the continent. DIRCO continues to utilise its foreign policy to tackle domestic challenges as part of its National Interest; The engagements further focused on areas of mutual interest between South Africa and other countries, and included the exchange of ideas and views on a wide spectrum of bilateral and global issues, such as the nexus between security and development, human rights issues, trade and investment promotions, tourism, etc. 5 Programme 2: International Relations (cont.) In continuing efforts to accelerate South Africa's economic diplomacy, DIRCO, through its missions abroad, consciously aimed on focusing on opportunities to support growing regional, continental and global trade and investment; The Economic Diplomacy and image building activities undertaken by South African missions abroad were directed at promoting, amongst others, the country’s economic interests, exploring investment opportunities, tourism promotion, skills development and cultural exchanges; In line with the SMART principle, this presentation will be disaggregated into 3 categories, namely; Political engagements, Trade and Investment, Promotion and Tourism; 6 Programme 2: International Relations POLITICAL Africa Bissau: A successful state visit by the President of Guinea-Bissau
