CSE Style This tutorial provides instruction and includes examples for print and online books as well as periodical citations in CSE style. CSE Style Council of Science Editors (CSE) is commonly used in the sciences. The latest publication is Scientific Style and Format: The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers 8th edition (2014). Reference Page The heading “References” is typically used for the citation list in research papers and research projects written in CSE style 3 Author Names Personal names are written last name first A list of author names is separated by a comma with no “and” before the last name as in some other styles 4 Author Names Use initials for first and middle names, and use NO periods or spaces in between initials Names are listed in the citation as in the same order as in the publication (not necessarily alphabetical) Example: Watson JD, Lee TD, Sanger F. 5 What if there is no author? Start the citation or reference with the article title The second piece of information is the publication date Example: Muhammad Ali and Frazier Clash Sept. 30. Sept 25, 1975. Wichita Times [Wichita, Kansas]. p. 5. See CSE page 566 for details 6 Corporate Names as Authors An organization such as a university, society, association, corporation, or governmental body may serve as an author Ignore the word “the” if it is the first word in the author name Example: “The American Chemical Society” becomes “American Chemical Society” when it appears as an author See CSE chapter 29.3.6.1.2 for more details 7 Journal Abbreviations All CSE styles require the use of journal abbreviations in the reference list Single-word journal titles are not abbreviated 8 Journal Abbreviations Find journal abbreviations by searching “journal abbreviations” on the web ISSN website includes “List of Title Word Abbreviations” More information about journal abbreviations is found in CSE Appendix 29.1 9 Other Notes about CSE Style A DOI is required, if available, although other information about electronic access is not necessary for items retrieved from common library databases Remember to pay close attention to capitalization, spacing, and all types of punctuation. (There is no italicization as in some other styles.) 10 Variations of CSE Citation-sequence Citation-name Name-year These styles affect in-text citations as well as the reference list, which must support each other.
