Counterfeit Bills in Circulation According to the United States Department of Treasury, an estimated $70 million in counterfeit bills are in circulation, or approximately 1 note in counterfeits for every 10,000 in genuine currency, with an upper bound of $200 million counterfeit, or 1 counterfeit per 4,000 genuine notes.
03
Percentage of $20 Bill in Circulation About 60 percent of that is in the U.S. The $20 bill is the most common counterfeit denomination in the states, while the $100 bill is the most common overseas.
How to detect counterfeit US money Feel the texture of the bill.
Compare the bill with another of the same denomination and series.
Notice the relative flatness and lack of detail on the fake bill. Look carefully at the printing quality.
Look for colored fibers in the paper.
Examine the serial numbers.
Look for security features in all denominations, except the $1 and $2.
05
What to look or feel for. Look for security thread (a plastic strip) running from top to bottom.
Hold the bill up to the light to check for the watermark. The image of the person whose portrait is on the bill can be found on all $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills series 1996 and later.
Use a magnifying glass to view micro-printing. For example, $100 bill The United States of America along Franklin’s collar.
Run your fingernail over the portrait’s vest of the bill. You should feel distinctive ridges, printers cannot reproduce this.
Bills should have even/flat edges not jagged.
Serial numbers are evenly spaced between numbers
